Custom web development

*A clarification before we get started - Cool Code Company build both websites and web applications and  collectively we call that web development. For the purpose of this text we will use the term website but please know we are referring to both. It just saves us typing out 'website and web app' 100 million times*

And yes, chances are you will read the first sentence below and add it in your head anyway...

Onwards!

Business websites are akin to storefront windows - if they don’t attract attention, people won’t come inside. That is to say, if your business website is outdated, difficult to navigate or fails to communicate your value proposition clearly, potential customers are likely to loose interest (or more specifically, not have any to begin with) and leave to find a shinier, more vibrant and more intuitive website....possibly owned by your competitor.

Most businesses in the UK today have a website. According to a 2025 survey by Forbes Advisor this number is upwards of 75%. That means, if you're a business owner in the UK you probably fall into that bracket.

Whether your website is simply an informative platform that showcases your services, an interactive experience that allows customers to make enquiries, book appointments or request quotes or a fully fledged digital platform that enables users to place orders, request refunds and raise support tickets your website plays a crucial role in how your brand is perceived.

For 'showcasing only' websites with little to no functionality, ready built template sites from the likes of WordPress or GoDaddy might be sufficient. However, for websites that need to do 'stuff' such as capture and store data, process orders, allow appointments to be booked or provide any kind of bespoke user experience - the only sensible option is to choose custom web development. This allows your website to be designed and developed from scratch based on your specific set of requirements. It can capture your workflows, incorporate you brand and ensure your business stands out from the competition with unique functionality and user experiences.

Common challenges you might face with off-the-shelf websites

As we have already alluded to, there are scenarios where template or off-the-shelf websites are perfectly adequate to match a business's requirements. For straight forward, informational only websites they make a lot of sense - they're cheaper, quicker to launch and provide everything the business requires. For others however, who require more complex functionality and features - off-the-shelf solutions don't cut the mustard. Let's take a look at some of the challenges off-the-shelf websites pose:

You grow...they don't

Off-the-shelf or template based websites can be a real challenge to scale. If your company grows and you want to add interactive features, integrate with other internal systems or add a customer portal element to your website you're probably going to run into issues.
Even when these features can be added, they often have to be implemented in a way that is dictated by the platform rather than in a way that genuinely suits your business processes, customer experience or longer term goals. This can lead to awkward workarounds, inconsistent user experiences and systems that act as outsiders from the way your business actually operates.

Performance (or lack thereof)

Off-the-shelf websites often come bloated with unnecessary code, plugins and features that can seriously impact performance. And not in a good way. Slow loading times, clunky user experiences and poor responsiveness not only frustrate your users but can also harm your search engine rankings and conversion rates.

Generic UI/UX

Template websites are generic by nature. They are templates after all and and can be used by anyone so even if they are customised to some degree - the underlying structure, layouts and user experience often remain largely the same - and customers do indeed notice this. This mean your website is pretty much indistinguishable from the next and can hamper your efforts to stand out from your competitors. Providing a unique user experience that has your brand stamped all over it is much more likely to engage prospective customers.

Limited...everything

Customisation, functionality, UX, Integrations...all extremely important aspects of a website for many businesses but all tend to be limited with template or off-the-shelf solutions. Let’s say, for example, you decide you want an area on your website where customers can log in to view their orders, manage subscriptions, download invoices, raise support tickets or track deliveries. With most template based platforms, functionality like this is either heavily restricted, reliant on third party plugins or simply not possible at all.

This goes for integrations too. Whilst many off-the-shelf platforms offer integrations with other well known third party systems, these integrations are usually limited to other mainstream off-the-shelf solutions. If your internal systems are bespoke, industry specific or lack a public API, integrating them with a template based website can be extremely difficult - if not impossible.

The custom advantage

Custom websites can benefit most businesses regardless of their size, shape or discipline. It is built from scratch to a specific set of requirements that reflect your business and your business alone. No features you'll never use, no ridiculously expensive plug ins and definitely no changing your processes to fit a third party vendors idea of reality. Here, we'll explore some of the key advantages of choosing custom over off-the-shelf websites:

Key features of custom web development

Whilst custom websites are unique by their very nature, there are some key characteristics you can expect to find within them:

1) Customised features and functionality

Starting with the most obvious, the defining characteristic of custom software is that it's...well...custom. And that of course applies to custom websites too. The features, functionality, integrations, workflows, branding and user experience of the website are all designed and developed in the way you need them to be, based on the outcomes you want to achieve.

2) Limitless integrations

If you're already using software systems - custom or otherwise - it might be important that your new website is able to integrate with them. With custom software, this is very rarely an issue regardless of size, complexity or age of the existing system. That’s because integrations are built specifically around your requirements, rather than relying on a single predefined method (such as an API key or limited third party connector) which may not always be available or suitable.

3) User centric design

Your website, your users, your choice. Custom web development allows your site to be designed entirely around the needs of the people using it. Every interface, workflow and interaction can be tailored to create the most intuitive and efficient experience possible. This user centric approach helps improve usability and adoption, reduce training time, increase productivity and encourage higher engagement - whether the website is being used by customers, employees or both.

4) A tangible competitive advantage

When you first started your business, you probably weren’t aiming to offer exactly the same products, services and experiences as your competitors whilst also using the same processes and systems. However, many businesses find themselves doing just that with only minor differences separating them from everyone else in the market. Custom websites put a stop to that. By developing your website around your unique business model, workflows and customer experience, you can create processes and capabilities that very obviously set you apart. Whether it’s improving efficiency, delivering a better customer journey or enabling services your competitors can’t easily replicate, a custom website can provide a meaningful and lasting competitive advantage.
