Case Study: Peppers Cable Glands Ltd - Existing Software Takeover
Peppers Cable Glands were worried about how to manage their critical in-house software without causing disruption to their operations after their previous vendor announced they would cease trading. The Challenge
Peppers, like many businesses, rely on a bespoke software system (P-ex) for some of their core business processes including quoting, stock management, purchasing and sales order processing.
Unfortunately, the vendor who originally developed and continued to maintain the system was to cease operations and thus, Peppers needed a new, trusted partner to take over the management of this crucial piece of software to ensure continuity, regular maintenance and new development when required.
The Solution
The first step in the takeover process was for the development team at Cool Code to get a thorough and deep understanding of the software - what it is used for, how it works and it’s underlying architecture.
They needed to grasp not only the visible user facing features but also the back end logic, databases, APIs and any third party dependencies the system relied on. This involved extensive code reviews, regular calls with the previous vendor where the various aspects of the software were explained, getting in and using the system independently, asking questions where necessary and a visit to the Peppers HQ to see the software in action and speak to the various user groups. In addition, whenever support tickets were raised, Cool Code were informed and gradually became involved in resolving them until the handover date. The goal was to create a comprehensive map of the system - how data flowed through it, how modules interacted and where the critical breakpoints were.
The Result
The software was fully handed over in April with Cool Code Company now fully managing the system and undertaking all support, maintenance and development requirements. The transfer was seamless and without issue, with zero impact on operations.
Peppers now have peace of mind that their core business system is fully managed and that they have a responsive, proactive development partner who are on hand to help them whenever they require it.
The Future
Cool Code Company will continue to provide support to Peppers and the P-ex system, carrying out regular maintenance and updates to ensure the software remains in good condition and fit for purpose. We will also work with Peppers to add new features and functionality where required as well as improving the system via automation and performance optimisation where possible.
